Description: The human brain is good at forming us/them dichotomies and does this with remarkable speed. Many studies have shown that the brain differentially processes images within milliseconds based on minimal cues about race or gender. In this workshop, we will develop a deeper understanding of the role of brain structures (ie., cortex, amygdala etc) and neurotransmitters (ie., oxytocin, dopamine etc) in shaping our experience of us/theming. We will also explore how our thoughts and feelings interact in creating automatic and unconscious biases. In addition, we will examine how flaws in our memory processes often lead us to “confirmation bias”. Finally, we will discuss strategies for decreasing implicit biases in ourselves and others.
